Let Us Sit

It’s a scary time.

Covid-19 is raging around the world. A deadly disease to which no human had immunity should, if nothing else, be the great equalizer. But it’s not. The poor, the disenfranchised, the marginalized have all paid a greater price, shouldered a heavier burden. We have been separated and isolated and too many now die alone.

Let us sit with that.

We watch, again and again, as unarmed black men and women are murdered. People pour into the streets to cry out “No more!” The forces of the status quo fight back. A reckoning is upon us for centuries of hate and indifference.

Let us sit with that.

While fires rage in our streets and fevers wrack bodies, our planet continues to heat up. Our lakes, rivers, and oceans choke on plastic, while we choke on polluted air, gaining reprieve only from a disease-forced shut down.

Let us sit with that.

It’s important that we sit with this. That we take the time to truly let in what is going on around us. We must ask ourselves what we have done and what we have failed to do.

But that is not the end. There is much that we can do. We can wear our masks. We can look out for our neighbors. We can donate. We can listen. We can make our voices heard. We can choose the sustainable option. We can give. None of us can do it all, but all of us can do something. And all those little somethings become points of light in the darkness. It’s a long road and it won’t be easy.

Let us sit with that. And then let us walk together.

I have been struggling with pessimism and lack of hope over the past week with the death of George Floyd. The cycle doesn’t stop, it seems, even when good people are put in charge. Your photos and words gave me a lift.
